Thank you, Cath, for bringing these threads together & introducing me to kirtan! The 'Acroplis to Agora' phrase comes from Steven Zucker from FIT and htp://Smarthistory.org (You can hear more from him here: http://museummobile.info/archives/136 ) I am inspired to review my Foucault now; there is something important about the spiritual - or at least pilgrimage - nature of the museum experience, and I would like to understand its relationship to the 'real' and virtual manifestations of the museum better. I look forward to continuing the conversation!

Nancy, those are wonderful thoughts.

Your observation that museums have shifted from the Acropolis to the agora inspires me to think more about how Web 2.0 has changed Foucault's notion of museums as heterotopia. Are they any longer 'other places' if they are out there in the town square?

I also appreciate the idea of the curator as leader of a call-and-response song. My mental association was immnediately with kirtan, another form of spiritual singing. Interesting, in the sense that museums are often conceived as secular-yet-spiritual spaces.

Haha - no problemo!

I even found myself singing along while I was listening :)

But seriously, while it paints a nice picture of groups collaborating, it also puts curators in the "callers" seat, which is where they should be.
